BEAD BY BEAD TO BEAT RECORD!

ALL they had was string and thousands of small, colourful beads . . .
Bead by bead, they assembled string after string . . .
And once it was all joined together, it became the longest string of beads in the world!
Kwazi Magubane (26) and Adera Kachienga (22) were among the scores of University of Pretoria students with only one thing on their minds: to break the Guinness World Record!
Guinness had given permission for the students to try and break the world record for the longest continuous string of beads.
Students in many university residences tried to outdo each other as they sat stringing like mad in a “bead-a-thon” before the weekend.
Then, on Saturday, all the strings of beads were joined together . . .
The goal was to make a string of over 2 000 metres. But the string ended up at 2 495m – easily beating the previous world record of 1 759m, which was achieved in the US last year.
About 263 314 beads were used.
But the bead-a-thon was not just about breaking a world record.
An excited RenĂ© Alberts of the Amato Pregnancy Crisis Centre told Daily Sun: “The beads were sold at R20 each to raise funds for pregnancy crisis centres such as the Bethany Centre and the Amato Centre.
“Now we will be able to expand and improve on the services currently offered to clients free of charge.”
